The night before we went to San Francisco, we stayed in Oakland. Apparently, that was a huge mistake as Oakland is apparently….well….not the safest place in the world. Thankfully, despite any close calls, we’re all alive and well
We woke up at the crack of dawn to get into the city pre-rush hour(s). The hotel had a waffle maker AND fresh blueberries. WIN!
We walked down Pier 39 to see the sea lions. There were hilarious! Apparently, about 25 years ago, sea lions came to Pier 39, and they haven’t left yet. They smelled awful! But were so cute. It was like they were playing king of the mountain with the docks. All day long.
Aww…. From the pier, we had a great view of the island Alcatraz. I keep wanting to call it Azkaban, but then have to remind myself that that’s not real. Alcatraz, however, is basically the same thing. Sans the dementors. Anyway, Al Capone and other equally miserable prisoners were sent to Alcatraz back in the day. Now it’s a tourist destination.
Lunchtime! Honestly, this trip has been about eating food and drinking (very responsibility. don’t worry!) We walked back down the hill back to the Wharf to Boudin to eat clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls.
The restaurant was, apparently, the place that has perfected the art of the sourdough bread. It was quite tasty. All in the same building was a coffee shop and a bakery. They had a track that ran along the roof and dipped down to the various shops to drop off baguettes.
